This is definitely not where she parked her bike. She’d just gotten off to stretch her back and take a break- only turned around for a moment and when she turned back to resume her trip the bike was gone....and the forest was looking much different.
“Alright what the hell?!” Her normal lavender eyes turned red and anyone who knew her would know that meant she was angry.
Motorcycles don’t just disappear. Not without her noticing. Not when no one else was around- literally there was no one here. No noise nothing- it was slightly eerie.
Yang wasn’t one to sit by and do nothing so she did the only thing she could think of, she started to walk. “Hello?! Is anyone here? If you stole my bike you’re going to regret it. Like major regret- so much regret you can’t even imagine the amount of regret.”
She was going to punch them so hard they would end up all the way back in Vale.

Character Name: Yang Xiao Long
Series: RWBY
Timeline: Volume 4 episode 12
Canon Resource Link:
I want a life where I don't know what tomorrow will bring. And that will be a good thing.
Character History:
Yang is the daughter of Taiyang Xiao Long and Raven Branwell. Raven left the family when Yang was just an infant and she grew up with her step mother Summer Rose and her half sister Ruby. She loved her step mother referring to her in canon as super mom. She died in battle when Yang was still young but she helped shape her childhood.
When Summer died Taiyang took it hard and that’s when Yang found out that Summer wasn’t her biological mother. After that she became obsessed with trying to find her real mom and find out why she left, but Tai would never give her any information about her (and with good reason).
Still young she finds what she thinks is a lead on her mother and waits until Tai leaves the house, bundles a young Ruby up in a wagon and sets out determined to find her. She walks for hours, pressing on and determined until she is tired and weak. But she reaches the abandoned house she was looking for only to be attacked by three beowolves. Unable to defend herself she is saved by her uncle Qrow. It teaches her an important lesson that she cannot get so obsessed with something she loses sight of everything else. Finding her mother wouldn’t matter if she was too sick and weak to do anything else.
She attends Signal Academy (which is basically their version of high school) where she learns how to fight and starts her training to become a Huntress. After Signal she is accepted into Beacon Academy- where her real Huntress training begins (like huntress college).
Yang is excited to learn her sister, Ruby, is also going to be attending Beacon with her, even though she should have had two more years at Signal. She’s never had a problem with her sister’s exceptional abilities and skills, she encourages them and always supports her sister in everything she does.
On their first night at Beacon, Yang, trying to help her sister makes friends, meets Blake Belladonna who Ruby had run into earlier that day. Blake is more interested in reading then talking to the two girls and when Yang gets upset by it it calls the attention of Weiss Schnee over. Little do they know that the four of them will by the next day become team RWBY.
The second day at Beacon is when things start to pick up. The students are shot out into the woods and told the first person they make eye contact with will be their partners for the next four years. They are supposed to make their way north to the old temple to pick up a relic and then head back to the cliff- but there are Grimm in the forest that they are expected to know how to deal with.
While Yang is looking for Ruby once she lands she runs into Ursa (bear Grimm), she’s taunting them as she fights them until one of them cuts a strand of her hair. Then all bets are off, activating her semblance she takes one out easily and is about to take the other out when it’s hit from behind and killed by Blake. The two make eye contact and are now partners. They make their way to the temple together. The relics they have to get are chess pieces and Yang grabs the knight because it looks like a cute pony. Right before they hear Jaune screaming like a girl. In the next few moments the rest of the students (that we care about) make it to the temple with two giant Grimm on their tails.
Deciding they don’t have enough people to fight the two Grimm they run- heading for the cliffs to the north. Unfortunately the Nevermore flies down and blocks their path forcing them all into battle. Yang teams up with Ruby, Weiss and Blake to take down the Nevermore- working seamlessly as a team. The other four take out the Death Stalker and the group returns to school where they are put into their official teams. Yang becomes part of team RWBY made up of Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang- with Ruby as their leader.
The four girls move into their dorm together and immediately decide to decorate, only there isn’t enough room for all their stuff so they create bunk bed held up with books and rope- not the most stable but it somehow works. The four attend classes together and train to fight together and as the school year goes on they become closer.
The city is preparing for the Vytal festival- where all four academies come together and hold a tournament placing their top huntsmen huntresses in battle to see will be victorious. This time it’s being held in Vale. The girls are out walking in the city watching as some of the students from other academies come in when they run into two people. The first a girl named Penny who is very odd, and that’s actually the first thing Yang says once they walk away. And a Faunus boy who had stowed away on a ship who runs by the girls and winks at Blake. At the docks Ruby notices a dust store has been vandalized and the girls listen in to two police officers talking saying that it’s the work of The White Fang- a terrorist group of Faunus.
Weiss and Blake get into an argument after that about the Faunus and the White Fang and Blake accidentally reveals that she is in fact a Faunus and part of the White Fang before taking off. Yang defends Blake while Weiss continues with her prejudice against Faunus but they head out to look for the teammate whose been gone for two days. They eventually split up, Ruby with Penny and Weiss with Yang to look. Blake and Sun are at the docks ready to ambush a White Fang sting on dust which turns into a battle with the White Fang who are being lead by a mob leader known as Roman Torchwick, eventually Ruby and Penny show up to the fight but the criminals get away. Weiss and Yang show up later and Blake apologizes to them and Weiss tells her no more secrets, but the team reconciles.
The day before the second term starts team RWBY and team JNPR are eating in the cafeteria when Ruby comes in stating that today has to be the best day ever. While she’s talking Nora keeps tossing food to Yang from across to tables that she happily eats. It’s all fun and games until Nora hits Weiss in the face with a pie. Then it’s all out war. Yang wields two turkeys as her weapons. Team RWBY come out victorious.
Getting back to school the girls are spending their day in the library...playing Risk (or this show’s version is Risk) which Yang is winning. They are interrupted by Jaune and Pyrrha and then Sun and his friend Neptune who he introduces the group to. Shortly after that Blake storms off and the girls finish their game losing to Neptune before heading back to their room. Weiss confronts Blake talking about how she’s been withdrawn and reminding her that she made a promise to her team to let them in on things. Blake tells them she’s worried about the White Fang and Roman and what else they can be planning. The girls decide to take it upon themselves to investigate and bring down the crime syndicate.
The next day after class the girls have devised a plan, which Yang points out means they are taking this moderately seriously. After Sun and Neptune crash the meeting and join in on gathering intel the team splits up. Yang is heading to the seedier part of town to speak with her informant about any thing he knows about Roman, Neptune goes with her. They take Yang’s motorcycle and end up at a familiar club. As soon as Yang enters Junior’s club his henchmen draw their guns but he tells them to let her through. Yang proceeds to interrogate him about Roman Torchwick. Junior is unable to provide any helpful information since Torchwick never came back after being disappointed by the henchmen he hired from Junior. Yang and Neptune leave the club where they get a call for help from Blake and Sun who are being pursued by Roman in a robot battle suit. They meet up with them in a highway chase and Sun and Neptune get knocked away and it’s just the girls of team RWBY vs Roman. The girls eventually take out the armor working together although Roman gets away again.
Blake is disappointed and catching Roman and the White Fang becomes her obsession. She has stopped sleeping and her grades are dropping and her training is slipping. Her friends are worried about her. When Sun asks her to the dance and she rejects him the girls tell her she should go but she refuses saying she doesn’t have time for things like that when the White Fang are still out there.
Ruby is worried about Blake but Yang tells her not to worry that Blake will be at the dance. Yang gets Blake alone and while Blake is resistant to do anything that isn’t solve the White Fang problem Yang tells her to listen. She tells Blake about her mother and how she abandoned her as a baby and how she tried to find her once- putting both her life and Ruby’s life in jeopardy because she was too tired and weak to fight. She says that she still wants to find her mother and that hasn’t gone away but she won’t compromise herself or her friends to do it. Blake argues with her and Yang points out that she’s so tired she can’t even stand upright she Yang pushes her. Yang hugs her and tells her that it’s still their priority to find the White Fang but they can’t let it consume them and she’ll save her a dance.
Blake does show up to the dance with Sun and Yang gets her first dance before giving her back to Sun and going off to mingle with her friends.
Following an incident that happened during the dance where the CCT tower (communications) was infiltrated and Ruby fought Cinder Fell for the first time they girls put together that somehow this is connected to the White Fang and Roman and that they know there is a base in the south west region of Vale.
Yang tries to cheer Ruby up after the incident with mail from Home which contains a letter from their father and their dog (yes he mailed a dog in a tube...don’t ask), Zwei. At the same time there is an announcement that the students are to meet in the amphitheater for their upcoming field trip and while Ruby worried that Zwei won’t be able to take care of himself Yang dumps out a week’s worth of canned food and tells her not to worry ( this is why we don’t let Yang take care of living things). Ruby however sneaks Zwei into her backpack to bring him on their trip.
The field trip, as Glinda announces when the students are all gathered is their trip is to choose an assignment shadowing veteran huntsmen. The girls decide that this is the perfect time to try and investigate southwest Vale for the secret White Fang base, so they choose a mission based there. Only the mission isn’t open to first year students. Professor Ozpin (headmaster of beacon and general Dumbledore-equse mentor) knowing what they want to do and knowing they will do it anyway lets them sign up. As the mission is to try and find this hidden base in vale. The huntsman they are shadowing is Professor Oobleck- their hyperactive eccentric history teacher.
As they are on their way Oobleck tells them they are heading to the abandoned city of Mountain Glenn- it was supposed to be an expansion of the city but it was overrun by Grimm and Vale gave up on it. It would be a perfect place for a hidden base. They land and start exploring the city, facing packs of Grimm which the girls defeat easily. Yang wonder why Oobleck isn’t helping them and he tells him he is, he’s observing and listening and that their mission is to search and then destroy. He begins questions them (minus Ruby) on why they chose to become Huntresses, starting with Yang. Yang states that she is a thrill seeker and she wants to travel the world and see everything she can and if she helps people along the way then it’s a win-win. Though she seems unsure of herself after she answers, as do the other two girls. Oobleck stops them and tells them to set up camp. Yang, Weiss, and Blake discuss their answers to Oobleck and their unease. Yang admit that unlike Ruby whose always wanted to help people, she just likes adventure and she needs to stop thinking of just herself if she’s going to be a huntress.
Later that night while Yang is on watch, Ruby leaves to follow Zwei and the two run into the white fang, following them they find their base only for the pavement to cave in beneath them, Ruby throws Zwei to safety before she falls through right into white fang territory. Zwei races back to their camp to get the others. The team and Oobleck realize Ruby might be in trouble and follow Zwei back to the hole in the pavement. Its then that Oobleck realizes what they had been missing the whole time, before Mountain Glenn fell they tried to build the city underground to hide from the Grimm. Only to find subterranean Grimm that finished off what was left of the city.
The team heads into the tunnels and makes it in tie to save Ruby from Roman. Roman orders an unscheduled departure from the facility, jumping on a train they have been loading with dust and bombs. The train takes off with Roman and the White Fang and the team immediately follows. They jump on the last car of the train to realize that it contains weapons, robots and a live bomb. Before they can detach the car it detaches its self and the bomb goes off. This happens with the next few cars and they realize that Roman is trying to blow holes in the tunnels to let the Grimm out and the train is heading right to Vale. Oobleck and Ruby stay on top of the train while Blake, Weiss and Yang head down to find Roman and stop it.
They are met with a series of opponents. The first being Neapolitan. Yang stays behind to fight her and the other two keep going. Yang is overwhelmed by Neo, not able to land a single blow after an extended fight and is knocked unconscious. Before Neo can hurt her further she is interrupted by a woman in a mask and Neo flees. Yang is just coming to and sees the woman leaving through a portal. Yang, Weiss and Blake emerge from the train with meet up with Ruby only to realize they haven’t stopped the train and its heading straight for the barrier into Vale. Weiss shields them with an ice wall as they train breaks through and lets the Grimm into the city.
Team RWBY begin to fight the Grimm but are overwhelmed, they are suddenly joined by team JNPR and Sun and Neptune who came when they heard the alarms they work together to fight off the Grimm and are soon joined by more students and professors from the school. They put down the Grimm, close the tunnel and arrest Roman. It all seems to have gone well…too well.
The girls, thinking that things are over now that Roman is in custody return to school and Yang suggests sleep before the Vytal tournament begins, which they are all for.
The Vytal festival is well underway. The festival is comprised of three rounds- the first being 4 on 4, the winners of the 4 on 4 can pick two of the teammates to compete in the 2 on 2 and those winners pick one of the teammates to compete in the 1 on 1 until everyone is eliminated.
Team RWBY wins their first fight against team ABRN, and afterwards to to the fairgrounds to eat. They run into Emerald and its revealed that Yang and Weiss will compete in the 2 on 2. The girls go eat and are joined by JNPR before their own fight, which team RWBY goes to spectate.
Yang and Ruby’s uncle, Qrow shows up at Beacon. Is drunk (as always), gets in a fight with Weiss’ sister, and then informs Ozpin that the infiltrator has injured the Fall Maiden and is in Beacon. It is revealed that the adults have a lot of secrets about what is going on in Vale. Qrow is one of Ozpin’s informants. Later on he goes to visit his nieces.
They play video games in their dorm, and Qrow recounts a few details of his last mission for them. They tell Qrow they have experience now since they brought down Roman; he tells them they are naïve and they still have a lot to learn, which they will do at school. He tells them to never stop learning. He also remarks that since Roman’s arrest all crime has stopped in Vale which makes him uneasy. He knows something is coming. He also reminisces about his team at school, which was comprised of him and the girls’ parents, Taiyang Xiao Long, their father, Ruby’s mother Summer Rose, and Yang’s mother Raven Branwen- Qrow’s sister.
Yang and Weiss’ doubles match is the next day against Neon Katt and Flynt Coal of team FNKI. Neon and Flynt start antagonizing the girls even before the match begins- Flynt accusing Weiss of her family’s company running his dad’s dust shop out of business and Neon taunting Yang about her weight and appearance. Once the match starts Yang goes directly for Neon who continues to taunt her. It’s really the first time we see Yang’s temper get the best of her. The angrier she gets the more she messed up and is unable to land a hit on Neon. She’s only paying attention to Neon and distracted by the taunts she can’t tune out that she doesn’t see Flynt getting ready to attack. Weiss does though and knocks them both into a geyser sacrificing herself for Yang. The attack doesn’t knock Flynt out but depletes his aura enough that Yang takes him out easily. Neon who is on skates looses her foots in some rocks and Yang is able to take her out next. Making her the winner, but by luck.
Yang moves on to the singles round and is chosen as the first fighter. Her opponent is Mercury Black. The two exchange a series of blows and Mercury is almost knocked out of the arena, he recovers and retaliates by firing projectiles from his boots which circle Yang and then come down on her, it looks like she’s knocked out but she activates her semblance and uses the energy to knock Mercury out winning the fight.
Yang starts to talk away, but Mercury apparently gets up and attacks her with a flying kick, she acts quickly and punches him in the leg, breaking it and he falls to the ground crying out. This causes an uproar from the spectaros who boo, the amount of angry and animosity gets the attention of Grimm in Mountain Glenn and they turn towards the city.
Back in the arena Yang is surprised to be surrounded by security telling her to stand down, she’s confused until she sees the replay footage of her attacking Mercury unprovoked. Emerald had used her semblance of illusions on Yang to make her think Mercury was attacking so that Yang would attack him. The first act in Cinder’s plans to turn the citizens against Beacon Academy.
After the match Yang returns to her dorm with the other girls were General Ironwood informs them that because of Yang’s actions team RWBY has been disqualified. Yang tries to explain what she saw but Ironwood thinks it’s just battle induced hallucinations. Once he leaves she asks the other girls if they believe her- Ruby and Weiss assure her immediately that they do but Blake hesitates. Yang is hurt by this and begins to tear up, Blake explains that she knew someone who used violence to get what he wanted and it started small with things like this and she’s scared that Yang is doing the same. Yang promises her that she’s not lying and this is what she saw and Blake tells her she believes her.
The rest of the girls leave and Yang stays behind to get some rest as she’s really not in a social mood. Qrow comes to visit and Yang tells him that she saw her mother after her fight with New- leaving through a portal. Qrow confesses that he’s been in contact with Raven and that Raven sends a message- she helped Yang once, she shouldn’t expect that again (Yang’s mother is terrible). Qrow tells her Raven is dangerous but that if she really wants to find Raven he will give her some information on how to. He leaves Yang to her thoughts.
The event the happen next shape the entire rest of the series. Though the matchups are supposed to be random- Cinder has hacked into the system when she infiltrated the CCT tower and is able to throw the matches. She matches up Pyrrha (whose semblance lets her control polarity) and Penny (who is a robot and therefore made of metal although no one knows this). With Emerald in the crowd altering Pyrrha’s mind the match ends when Pyrrha accidentally kills Penny.
Cinder then hacks into the broadcast not letting them cut away from the dead robot girl on the stage and a shocked and heartbroken Pyrrha. She broadcasts her words to the world- telling them that this is what happens when you trust Huntsmen. She stirs up unrest in the city of Vale which combined with Yang’s fight earlier attracts the Grimm to the city.
The Grimm infiltrate the city and the air militia is infiltrated by Neo and Roman meaning there are no reinforcements coming in to help. It’s complete chaos.
Yang who had been in her dorm the whole time immediately calls Ruby but she’s not picking up (as Mercury had stolen her phone and broke it) she then gets a call from Blake whose with Weiss. Yang is heading down to defend the school because the White Fang are letting Grimm in and Blake and Weiss are on their way only to be waylaid but Atlas’ robot army, that is now under the control of Roman, the White Fang and Grimm. Yang eventually meets up with Weiss after they have defeated the robots and Weiss tells her that Blake went off after one of the White Fang. Adam- the leader and Blake’s es who she left after he began to get violent and she realized what he really was. Blake is facing off with Adam who tells her she will suffer for betraying him- he attacks her and it catches Yang’s attention. Adam vows he will kill everyone she loves starting with Yang. Yang- angry, runs in to attack planning on using her brute force to take him down, instead he uses his sword to slice her arm off and she falls to the ground unconscious. Before he can finish her off Blake distracts him and uses her semblance to escape with Yang. They regroup with the others at the school and everyone is being evacuated.
Ruby finally makes it back only to find Yang unconscious and almost everyone else injured. Jaune and Pyrrha are still at the school with Ozpin and Ruby and Weiss promise to get them back and Ren and Nora promise to watch over Yang. They part ways.
Ruby and Weiss are too late by the time they get to the top of the tower and Ruby witnesses Cinder kill Pyrrha. Devastated Ruby lets out a cry and suddenly a bright white light errupts from her eyes and everything goes white (yeah, we don’t know yet either). She wakes up back home to find out the school is destroyed and Ozpin and Pyrrha are dead and Cinder got away. Yang is ok but recovering, mourning the loss of her arm.
She’s in her room despondent when Ruby comes to visit. She tells Ruby that Weiss’ dad came and took her back to Atlas, and that Blake is gone. She stayed long enough to make sure Yang was ok and then took off without a word. Yang is deeply hurt by this- especially when she needs her best friend the most. She angrily tells Ruby she doesn’t care where Blake went. Going on to add that bad things happen sometimes for no reason and she wants to be left alone. When Ruby tells Yang she loves her Yang doesn’t reply. She says despondent and keeps to herself, and as winter sets in Ruby leaves to join what’s left of team JNPR to make their way to Mistral and Haven academy because Qrow had mentioned that’s where the next target might be.
Winter passes into spring and Yang is still recovering from the loss of her arm and dealing with a case of PTSD. She reacts badly to seeing a picture of Adam on the news- immediately shutting the tv off visibly shaken. Tai comes home with a package for her, a state of the art prosthetic arm that was made special for her from Atlas. Yang isn’t too thrilled and tells him she’ll try it on later before she goes to finish her chores.
She’s washing a glass and accidentally drops it causing it to shatter in the floor. The shatter causes a flashback to her fight with Adam and it takes her a few moments to recover, and she notices her hand shaking as she regains her composure. She isn’t used to feeling this weak and she keeps letting herself wallow.
She is having nightmares, mostly about Adam, and her inability to defend herself against him. In the nightmares she has both arms and her weapons but they are ineffective in fighting him. He approaches her and begins to unsheathe his sword only for both her right arms and her weapons to suddenly be gone. Before he can attack she wakes up with a start.
Downstairs she hears voices talking to her father so she gets up and heads down to discover that Professor Port and Professor Oobleck are there sharing teaching stories about Qrow and team STRQ. They tell her that they are taking a brief break from repairs in Vale and ask her why she has not tried on her new arm. She tells them that this is her new normal now and that everyone is trying to ignore it but she can’t. She lost a piece of herself that she is never getting back and she needs to learn to live with that.
Tai agrees but also tells her that she can’t let it stop her from being the person she always wanted to be, when she’s ready he will be there to help her. She returns to her room after relaxing with the professors for a while, only to still look forlornly at the arm. However she overhears the professors ask Tai if he’s going to go out to look for Ruby and he says he has something else to take care of right now, meaning her. There’s guilt there that she’s letting her sister stay in harm’s way because she can’t get it together.
The next day she makes a decision and comes outside to find her father wearing the arm. He just grins at her and says lets get started. They start training, Yang learning to use her new arm and relearn how to fight. She was always formidable in hand to hand combat and she still is.
Tai tells her that’s shes a good fighter but that her semblance is basically a temper tantrum that she uses without considering how much it exhausts her. Because of that it puts her at a disadvantage if she can’t take someone out with one hit. He tells her that she can’t always just brute force her way through her problems and her fights that she needs to looks for other ways around them sometimes. He tells her that her mother had those same traits and he admired that about her but they also became her faults and it was why team STRQ broke up. Yang takes this talk to heart- knowing he is right and her anger is what got her in this spot to begin with.
Spring turns to summer and Yang spray paints her prosthetic arm to match her colors. She prepares to leave home, Tai asks her if she’s going after her mother or her sister. She doesn’t answer him but the answer is her sister via her mother. She takes a ship to Anima and then takes off on her motorcycle towards Mistral.
Abilities/Special Powers:
- Combat: Yang has been trained extensively in hand to hand combat and weapon skills since she was a young girl. She's been training to be a Huntress since she was a teenager. Her style of fighting resembles boxing and kickboxing. She is extremely strong, seen to be able to punch grown men and send them flying through windows and walls. She wears two gauntlets known as Ember Celica on her wrists, which can retract into bracelets. She combines shots from her gauntlets with punches for close melee fighting. She also uses the recoil from her gauntlets to launch herself at her opponents and to increase her power. Since the loss of her right arm she only uses one gauntlet. She has incorporated her prosthetic arm into her combat and often times uses it as a shield or a blunt force weapon.
- Aura: In the world of RWBY Aura is the manifestation of a person's soul. Aura is an energy source for Hunters and Huntresses. It can be used as defense, creating a shield, keeping one from being injured during battle. It can be used as offense sending waves of energy towards an enemy. It also can heal small injuries like cuts and bruises. It takes a lot of focus and energy to unlock and use one's aura but with practice it becomes second nature. In battle aura can deplete, a depleted aura can leave the person open to harm. Yang like all huntsmen has proficient use of her aura.
- Semblance: Semblance is the manifestation of specific powers unique to each person- like their super hero power. It is fueled by their aura and its thought to reflect their personality in some way. Yang's semblance is the ability to absorb kinetic energy from the hits she takes and then turn all that energy outward into a powerful attack. Basically the harder she gets hit the harder she hits back. Its stated that the energy she absorbs is twice the amount that she's hit with. When she manifests her semblance her eyes turn red and her hair glows.
